Physics 1.1: PreK/K & Lower Elementary

 Hi all!

Today went splendidly well!  I enjoyed getting to know some new faces and personalities.

We went over our classroom rules:

1.) Listen (to teachers and others- everyone has important things to say!)

2.) Raise your hand (when others are speaking)

3.) Don't touch (until the teacher says you can)

4.) Stay in your seat

5.) HAVE FUN!

And we did have fun.  We ran races to learn about the concept of speed/velocity.  Speed is measured with time and distance.  So every child measured out ten meters and then ran, hopped and walked while I timed them.  Of course, running took less time and walking took more.

We also bowled with ping pong balls vs. baseballs to study the idea of momentum.  The kids really got this concept super well!  At the end of class, I was impressed how they were (almost) all able to recognize that a truck has more momentum than a motorcycle (both going the same speed).  The Lower Elementary journaled about this concept.

I haven't taught the little ones for quite some time, so a big thank you to Joy, Sara and Becky!  I forget about all the big emotions, anxiety about doing things wrong and general wanting mommy.  (I was actually expecting way more talking out and hyperactivity and I'm happy to say that the kids did super well!)  Assistants really do add a lot to the classroom environment in my opinion....just in case any of you ever feel like you're just standing around :)

Your child should have a sheet in their science folder that includes a synopsis, At Home Activity, etc.

Here are some extra activity options, if you'd like them.  The song is pretty funny.
