Art & Poetry 1.3: MS & Upper Elementary

Our class focused on discovering emotions in different artworks by observing the person/people/creature portrayed and identifying the elements of art used to help create those emotions. We finished our Jacob Lawrence styled collage art based on the Maya Angelou poem from last week, then all the students drew pictures that were supposed to show a character having an emotion. Another theme that emerged was "story" as a connection between visual art and words, as we thought of backstories or ideas behind the pieces of art we looked at today!

If your child did not bring their poem homework from last week, please text or email it. I'm missing poetry from the last two classes from several people!

Several children took home their art project from class to finish it at home, so check with your kids to see if they have an art piece to complete.

Homework for this week, both MS and UE:

  • Write an acrostic poem based on your own first name, describing something you like, something that is meaningful to you, or a memory that is important.
  • Video about how to write an acrostic poem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhtzu2qKTIU

Example: Alyssa

At home, I

Listen to the Concerto de Aranjuez,

Yellow sunlight and myself

Silent on the floor,

Singing along with each note of the

Adagio, preparing to (one day) play it with my own voice.

This poem will be used as the inspiration to create a visual art project for the final class! Next week, I will hand out small canvases for students to use. The acrostic poem and the art on the canvas will be their combined final project for this quarter. They can start thinking about what they would like to do on the canvas, and that can influence what kind of poem they want to write.

If their name is very short or they would like a longer poem, they are welcome to include their middle and/or last name, too!
