Mapmaking 1.4: Pre-K/K & Lower Elementary

Hi everyone,

We’re finishing up our last two weeks of our mapmaking journey with one project. Since nothing says “elementary school” like a diorama, we’re creating dioramas that map The Gruffalo book. I attached some pics as examples. The younger group will just be thinking about the sequence in which the Mouse meets the other characters. The older group with create a grid map with a key (see my example) that will show the major landmarks.

We’ll get to use water color paints, glue, paper, sand, pizza boxes, and stuff from nature to make our dioramas.

We do need a few more rolls of toilet paper, so if you can send some next week, I’d appreciate it. Also, I forgot to tell the kids to bring 1) some short sticks to make a logpile house for the snake (no longer than 3 inches), and 2) a few rocks (not bigger than an inch). If you mention it to them, they’ll likely remember what they’re for. I’ll bring some too. If they want to include other things (like berries, small flowers, acorns), they’re welcome to bring those too. I got the moss from the dollar store, but if you see some of the puffy kind out in nature, please send it!

Regarding the Expo - this project is really the only thing we’ve done this quarter that is Expo-worthy, so I’m hoping to take some pics next week to send to Melissa. However, there’s a decent chance that they won’t all be complete (especially the PreK/K class). If that’s the case, please help your child finish them at home and take some nice pictures to send to Melissa so they can be included in the Expo.

Thanks!
