Physics 1.4: Pre-K/K & Lower Elementary

Howdy!

We studied Newton's 2nd Law, which has to do with heaviness and moving.  Basically, it means you are going to have to push a heavier object harder than a lighter object to get them to go the same speed.  This explains why our mini vans are gas guzzlers :)

Please review that concept, especially with the 1st-2nd graders.  I had a dyslexic moment and got confused during their class....the being interrupted constantly didn't help....

We played "Forces" charades where I acted out various actions, the students guessed what I was doing and labeled my action as a "push" or "pull".  We played with cars going down a ramp, bowled an obstacle course with a bowling ball and tennis ball and made banner art by bowling two balls, one light and one heavy, dipped in paint down a LONG strip of paper.  I let the PreKK class make hand prints at the end, just for fun:)

I sent home bags with supplies- 1 per family- to do the At Home Activity.

HOMEWORK:

  • All Grades Activity-  (Materials- straw, fishing line, balloon, tape, 3 pennies)  Make balloon rockets by taping a straw lengthwise to a balloon.  Thread the straw onto the fishing wire.  Tape the fishing wire between two chairs.  Carefully fill the balloon with air and pinch the end closed.  Line the rocket up next to the chair as its “starting line”.  Let go of the balloon and measure how far it travels.  Next, repeat the experiment, but also tape a coin to the balloon.  Release again.  Once again, measure how far it travels.  Repeat all steps with a second coin and then a third coin.  Before starting the activity, hypothesize which balloon will go the furthest.  Which balloon did go the furthest after the activity was completed?
  • All Grades Book-  Choose a book from the library that discusses Newton’s Law of Motion.
  • Grades 1-2 Vocab-  Read the synopsis of this lesson.  IF desired, in your Science notebook, think about what each vocabulary word means, read the definition, draw a picture of each word and then copy the definition from the synopsis page.  Label the page as “Physics 4: Newton’s Second Law” with date.

Have a great week!
