Physics 1.5: Pre-K/K & Lower Elementary

 Hello Coop Families!

I can't believe today was our 5th class and therefore our last class.  Quarters always fly by.

It sounds like the At Home Activity from last week, the rocket balloons, needed longer string, so that they could slow down with more weight.  Sorry!

Today in class we did lots of mini-demos and discussions about actions and reactions, then finally talked about Newton's 3rd law.  For every action, there's an opposite and equal reaction.  We put alkaseltzer into film canisters and made rockets- the rockets flew up higher when we used more alkaseltzer.  The gasses pressed down and the ground pushed back, sending the rockets into the air via Newton's 3rd Law.  The LE really enjoyed the rockets; the preKK was rather timid about the popping.  Both groups seemed to get the concept.

Homework:

(STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO NARRATE THEIR ANSWERS!!)

  • All Grades Activity- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66pt26XxSjM  Students will watch Wile E. Coyote and the RoadRunner duke it out☺ Student will choose 2 actions done by either character that break Newton’s Laws. Create a table:

Newton’s Law Broken

Draw picture of what happened in cartoon

Explanation of how this action breaks Newton’s Law (what should have happened in the cartoon)

  • All Grades Book*- Choose a book from the library that discusses Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.

  • Grades 1-2 Vocab- Read the synopsis of this lesson. IF desired, in your Science notebook, think about what each vocabulary word means, read the definition, draw a picture of each word and then copy the definition from the synopsis page. Label the page as “Physics 5: Newton’s Third Law” with date.
  • Video- Newton's 3rd Law of Motion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUgFT1hRTE4

I forgot to send out these book ideas earlier- sorry!  I hope these books are helpful as you learn more about physics with your child(ren).
