Art & Poetry 2.2: Pre-K/K & Lower Elementary
Dear families,
After reviewing our Elements of Art chant, we dove in to learning more about the elements of poetry. Poems can be:
- About anything!
- Have many or a few words
- Have a unique form or shape
- Sometimes have a rhythm or beat
- Have a title
- May use unique or different words
- Can be serious or funny
- Share feelings or emotions
- Have line breaks
- Share a topic, idea, or story
We read several poems from a beautifully illustrated poetry book for children out loud to emphasize these elements of poetry, including The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carrol and a few other short classics. If you have any other poetry books at home with great pictures, this would be a good time to bring them out! Just choosing one or two poems and seeing what elements of poetry they can see in it would help review these concepts.
Each student then wrote a poem based on a color they chose. The process was to use the five senses to describe what something looks, sounds, smells, tastes, and feels like, according to the individual student. I encouraged everyone to be descriptive, because the more we could describe what we were experiencing with our senses, the better our listeners/readers would experience it, too!
Some children brought home the pages they drew as they worked on their poetry, and some didn't want to take their page home. I didn't require anyone to write anything more than the color they chose, which they could copy from my whiteboard. I would encourage you to write down their poem from this email so your child can see it again this week, and they can do whatever kind of project with it that you think would be fun for them. If they want to copy it down, or illustrate it with pictures, or put it on a decorated page as a "framed artwork", I would love to hear next week what they did with their poem!
Here are everyone's poems that they wrote. There was a lot of imagination involved! Next week we will refocus on Jacob Lawrence's artwork and draw more parallels between poetry and art.
Enjoy!
